The annual Gion Matsuri Festival is upon us, and for the next few weeks many Kyoto residents and visitors will enjoy the spectacle of the 34 yamaboko floats before the official parades on July 17 & 24.

After spending several days putting it together, members of the Niwatori Hoko float take it out for a test ride - of one block. This float has been a participant in the festival for more than 450 years.

毎年恒例の祇園祭が近づいてきた。7月17日と24日の公式パレードを含め、これから数週間、多くの京都市民や観光客が34基の山鉾のスペクタクルを楽しむことになる。

数日間かけて山鉾を組み立てた後、鶏鉾のメンバーが山鉾を試運転する。この山鉾は450年以上も祭りに参加している。
