Today’s photograph is of a central atrium garden, a common feature in old Japanese Machiya (row houses). These narrow, long houses feature a shop in the front, living quarters in the middle around the atrium, and a storage warehouse in the back.

This machiya in central Kyoto dates from the beginning of the 20th century, and has been nicely maintained; while newer apartments loom overhead.
