Bright sun with sharp shadows, blue sky, and almost white sand. All of these qualities can be found most days at the beach in Southern California.

Yet in Kyoto, they rarely exist. Instead, soft light and almost infinite shades of green foliage are the norm.

You wouldn't think the environment would be so different, yet the change smacks me in the face every time I come back.
